5 Common Problems with Solar Panels in Tayside (and How to Avoid Them)

Solar panels are a reliable way to reduce energy bills, but like any technology they can experience issues over time. Learn about the most common solar panel problems, their causes, and how proper installation and maintenance can help keep your system performing efficiently for years to come.

Let’s be honest: solar panels are a brilliant investment. They cut your bills, help the planet, and: if you live in Dundee: they even take advantage of that "sunniest city in Scotland" claim to fame. But if you’re a homeowner in Tayside, whether you’re in the heart of Perth, a seaside cottage in Arbroath, or a terrace in the West End of Dundee, it’s not always as simple as "slap them on and watch the money roll in."

At Herofix, we’re big fans of solar (obviously), but we also believe in being straight with people. There are specific "gotchas" that come with living in this part of the world. From our historic architecture to the aggressive seagulls of the Angus coast, there are hurdles you need to know about before you sign on the dotted line.

Here are the five most common problems we see with solar panels in Tayside: and, more importantly, how you can avoid them.

1. The "Slate Roof Struggle" (Old Tayside Architecture)

Tayside is famous for its stunning Victorian and Edwardian homes. But what looks beautiful to a passerby can be a nightmare for a solar installer. If you have a traditional Scottish slate roof, you’re dealing with a material that is brittle, thin, and very easy to break.

The Problem:
Many national installers use "standard" mounting kits designed for modern concrete tiles. If they try to force these onto your 100-year-old slates in Dundee or Perth, you’ll end up with cracked tiles and: eventually: water dripping through your ceiling. Even worse, if the installer doesn't understand the structural integrity of older rafters, the weight of a heavy array could cause sagging over time.

Installing solar panels on a slate roof

How to Avoid It:

  • Specialised Brackets: Make sure your installer uses specific "slate hooks" or flashing systems designed for heritage roofs. These sit under the slates without putting pressure on them.
  • A Proper Survey: Don’t settle for a "remote" quote based on Google Maps. You need someone to actually look at your roof (and inside the attic) to check those rafters. Here at Herofix, we do both.
  • Local Knowledge: At Herofix, we know Tayside’s housing stock inside out. We treat every slate like it’s a piece of history.

2. Planning Permission & Conservation Areas

Dundee and Perth are packed with conservation areas: Broughty Ferry, the West End, and Perth’s historic centre, just to name a few.

The Problem:
You might think you have "Permitted Development Rights" (which usually means you don't need planning permission), but those rights are often restricted in conservation areas. If you install panels on a "primary elevation", basically any roof that faces a public road: without permission, the council can force you to take them down. This is a massive, expensive headache that ruins your ROI.

How to Avoid It:

  • Check the Elevation: If your panels are going on the back of your house and aren't visible from the road, you’re usually fine. If they’re on the front, you need to talk to the council.
  • Listed Building Consent: If your home is actually listed, you always need consent. No exceptions.
  • We Handle the Boring Stuff: When you work with us, we can help you navigate the Perth and Kinross or Dundee City Council planning portals. We’ve seen what they like (and what they don't).

3. The "Sunniest City" Myth (Weather & System Sizing)

We love to brag that Dundee is the sunniest city in Scotland. And it’s true! But let’s keep our feet on the ground: it’s still Scotland, not the Sahara.

The Problem:
Some installers will show you "estimated generation" figures based on perfect conditions that simply don't happen in a Tayside winter. If your system is undersized or poorly oriented (e.g., facing North-East because "it'll still work"), you won’t see the savings you were promised. During our famously grey, drizzly November days, a system without a battery might barely cover your kettle’s power usage.

How to Avoid It:

  • Go for Battery Storage: In Tayside, a solar battery is almost essential. It allows you to store the energy you generate during those sunny Dundee mornings to use during the dark Perthshire evenings.
  • Realistic Projections: Ask for a conservative estimate. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Optimisation: Use high-efficiency panels (like the ones we supply) that are designed to perform better in "diffuse" light: aka cloudy days.

4. Coastal Critters (The Gull & Pigeon Problem)

If you live in Arbroath, Montrose, or even parts of Dundee, you know that our gulls are… bold.

The Problem:
Solar panels create a perfect, warm, sheltered gap between the panels and your roof. To a seagull or a pigeon, this is a five-star hotel. They will nest under there, make a tremendous amount of noise, and cover your shiny new panels in droppings (which drastically reduces their efficiency). Their nests can also trap moisture against your roof, leading to rot.

Installation of bird guarding on solar panels

How to Avoid It:

  • Bird Guarding (Mesh): Don't wait for them to move in. Have professional bird mesh installed around the perimeter of your array from day one. It’s a small extra cost that saves you a massive cleanup bill later.
  • Regular Cleaning: If you’re near the coast, salt spray and bird mess will build up. A quick rinse once a year (safely!) keeps your generation high.

5. The "Fly-by-Night" National Installer

This is perhaps the biggest "problem" we see. A big national company sends a salesperson to your door in Forfar, sells you a generic system, and then disappears.

The Problem:
If something goes wrong: an inverter fault or a loose connection: these companies are often hard to get hold of. They don't have local teams, and you might wait weeks for a technician to travel up from the Midlands. Plus, they often lack the local expertise needed for Tayside’s specific building standards and weather conditions.

How to Avoid It:

  • Choose Local: Use a company that actually has a presence in the area. If you have an issue, you want someone who can be at your door the next day.
  • Check Certifications: Ensure they are MCS certified. This is non-negotiable for your safety and for accessing any future grants.
  • Read the Reviews: Look for reviews from your neighbours in Dundee or Perth, not just generic testimonials on a website.
