If you’ve been wandering around a garden centre in Perth or taking a walk through the West End of Dundee lately, you’ve probably heard a common rumour. It’s the one about air source heat pumps.
The story usually goes something like this: “They’re great for the environment, but they sound like a jet engine taking off in your garden.”
At Herofix, we hear this a lot. Homeowners in Tayside are ready to replace their gas boiler and embrace renewable energy, but they’re worried they won’t be able to enjoy a quiet morning coffee in the garden or that they’ll end up in a noise dispute with the neighbours.
We’re here to tell you that the "noisy heat pump" is largely a thing of the past. Welcome to the Quiet Revolution. In this post, we’re going to bust the myths, look at the actual numbers, and show you how a modern installation in your Tayside home can be as peaceful as a Sunday morning on the Tay.
What Does "Noise" Actually Mean?
Before we talk about heat pumps, let’s talk about your house. Your fridge hums. Your dishwasher sloshes. Your boiler clicks and whirrs. We’ve all become "noise-blind" to the sounds of a modern home.
When people worry about heat pump noise, they are usually thinking of the massive, industrial units from fifteen years ago. Modern domestic units are a completely different beast.

To put things into perspective, let’s look at some common decibel (dB) levels:
- A quiet library: 30 dB
- A modern refrigerator: 35 dB
- A normal conversation: 60 dB
- A vacuum cleaner: 75 dB
The quietest heat pumps we install at Herofix, such as the Samsung EHS Mono HT Quiet or the Vaillant aroTHERM Plus, operate at around 35 to 42 dB in their standard modes. If you put them into "Quiet Mode" or "Night Mode," that can drop as low as 30 dB.
Essentially, your heat pump is about as loud as the fridge sitting in your kitchen. Once you’re a few steps away from it, or behind a double-glazed window, you likely won't hear it at all.
The Scottish Rules: Staying Within the Law
In Scotland, we have specific regulations to ensure that renewable energy doesn't come at the cost of peace and quiet. This is especially important in built-up areas like Dundee’s tenements or the semi-detached streets of Perth.
Under Permitted Development Rights in Scotland, a heat pump installation usually doesn't need planning permission, provided it meets certain criteria. One of the biggest criteria is noise.
The 35dB Rule: Generally, the noise level shouldn't exceed 35 decibels at the boundary of your neighbour’s property.
MCS Standards: All installations should follow the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) standards. This involves a "noise assessment" before the unit is even ordered.
At Herofix, we don't just guess. We perform a full site survey to calculate exactly where the unit should go to stay well within these limits. We look at the distance to the boundary, any reflecting surfaces (like stone walls), and the specific "Sound Power Level" of the unit we’re recommending.
Meeting the "Silent Heroes" of 2026
Not all heat pumps are created equal. If noise is your primary concern, we usually point our Tayside customers toward two specific brands that have mastered the art of the "whisper-quiet" install.
1. The Samsung EHS Mono HT Quiet
As the name suggests, Samsung built this unit with silence in mind. It features a multi-serrated fan and a double-layered sound insulation system.
- Why it’s great for Tayside: It’s a high-temperature pump, meaning it can often work with your existing radiators: perfect for those older stone houses in Angus or Perthshire.
- Noise Level: As low as 35 dB(A) in quiet mode.
2. The Vaillant aroTHERM Plus
Vaillant is a household name for a reason. Their aroTHERM Plus is Quiet Mark certified, which is basically the "Gold Medal" for low-noise appliances.
- Why it’s great for Tayside: It uses a natural refrigerant (R290) which is incredibly environmentally friendly and allows for very high efficiency even when the Scottish winter is at its coldest.
- Noise Level: It’s often described as "fridge-quiet" and is one of the most popular choices for homes with smaller gardens.

Why a "Herofix Install" is Quieter
A heat pump is only as quiet as the person who installs it. You could buy the most expensive, silent unit on the market, but if it’s bolted directly to a wooden deck or placed on uneven ground, it’s going to vibrate and make noise.
When we install a system in Tayside, we follow a strict "Quiet Protocol":
- Anti-Vibration Mounts: We use high-quality rubber "feet" or specialist mounting brackets that soak up any micro-vibrations before they can reach your house.
- Strategic Positioning: We avoid placing units in "acoustic traps": tight corners where sound can bounce and get louder.
- Pipework Insulation: We ensure that the pipes carrying the heat into your home are properly lagged and secured, so there’s no rattling or "knocking" inside your walls.
- Distance is Your Friend: Doubling the distance from the heat pump usually reduces the perceived noise by about 6 decibels. We find the "sweet spot" in your garden that balances efficiency with silence.
Addressing the "Dundee Tenement" Challenge
We know what you’re thinking: "That’s all well and good for a big garden in Scone, but I live in a flat in Dundee with a shared courtyard."
Noise is even more critical here. In these cases, we look at ultra-compact units and clever shielding. Sometimes, we can even install acoustic housings: specialist covers that further dampen the sound without restricted the airflow the pump needs to work.
The goal is always the same: No complaints from the neighbours.

Honest Talk: What About Winter?
We promised to be honest. In the middle of a Tayside January, when the temperature drops to -5°C, your heat pump has to work harder. When the fan speeds up to pull heat from the freezing air, the noise level does increase slightly.
However, even at its hardest working point, a modern unit is still significantly quieter than an old-fashioned oil boiler or an ageing gas boiler. Plus, in the middle of a Scottish winter, you aren’t exactly sitting out in the garden with a book, are you? You’re inside, where the double glazing and wall insulation will keep the sound out and the heat in.
